Al Balad, which refers to the “Historical District” in Jeddah, was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. Some would describe it as an interactive open-air museum of sorts. Al Balad strives to preserve the history of old Jeddah, whether in its architecture, alleyways, or marketplace. No doubt, it has a distinctive charm to it, especially at night.

Take A Step Back in Time / Wander the Alleyways of Al Balad

Stepping into Al Balad, you will travel back in time by a century at least. The alleyways are narrow but there are always open areas connecting them. What will probably stand out immediately is how unique the designs of all the doors and Roshans (wooden windows) are, you will also notice that no two doors are the same.

Many guests enjoy taking photos next to all the different doors along Abu Enaba Street. You can then relax in a traditional coffee shop that used to be the home of one of the most prominent houses, Baeshen. There are a few souvenir shops in the area, as well as a bakery (Al Saeedi Bakery) that attracts the guests with its wonderful aroma.

Before reaching Al Alawi Souq, you will come across an array of colorful textiles and garments from all over the world, available for wholesale. However, similar items can be bought in smaller quantities from Al Badou Souq which is located next to Bab Makkah.

Built in 1881, it welcomed foreign dignitaries in the early 1900’s, even serving as a transient royal residence of King Abdulaziz Al Saud. Today, the history of Al Balad is preserved through the collection of old photographs and memorabilia, you’ll find at its museum.

Heading west, you’ll reach Bab Makkah, where you can stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables. Souq Albadou is next to Bab Makkah, even if you aren’t a shopper, you will enjoy the bustling scenes.
